BREWER / CELLAR TECH

Crooked Stave Brewing Co. is currently looking for an experienced shift brewer and Cellar tech.

Founded in Denver, Colorado in 2010, the brewery’s artistic creations, most of which use Brettanomyces yeast and mature in oak, result in beers of extraordinary complexity.

Position Overview

The Brewer / Cellar Tech has an essential role in the brewhouse, fermentation cellar and packaging hall, and acts as a supporting function to all aspects of production. This position focuses on the entire process of brewing from grain to package. As a brewer you are expected to master all aspects of brewing, cellaring and packaging.

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Head Brewer/Quality Manager and is an integral part of the production team. This position also collaborates with the entire production team and is expected to communicate any issues with personnel, equipment, etc. to the appropriate parties right away.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities

Cellar

  • Fermentation and Foeder Cellars

  • Transfer beer that has finished all aspects of its recipe and has passed all quality checks from the fermentation cellar to the assigned vessel(s) BT, Foeder or Barrels, while maintaining the quality and integrity of the product

  • Execute the appropriate CIP/SIP/tank purge while maintaining a safe work environment for him/herself as well as for all other people in the area

  • Dry Hopping, fruit additions and other adjunct additions

  • Maintain a clean work area, including, but not limited to the scrubbing of tank exteriors, tank feet and legs, floors and floor drains

  • Setup, run and pay attention to multiple tasks (transfers, cleaning loops, etc.) at the same time in order to complete all expected work in a timely manner

  • Barrel Cellar

  • Transfer product to/from barrels and foeders into BT, while following all SOP’s to ensure quality and integrity.

  • Monitor the condition of beers in the barrel cellar throughout the aging process, including barrel rinsing, and sanitation

  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment - Cleaning and Organization are an integral and constant focus in this position. From the cleaning of the work environment to the proper chemical cleaning of transfer and filtration equipment.

Brewer

  • Brewhouse Wort Production; Attain a working knowledge required to perform the following job functions with the ability to complete them in the specified length of time.

  • Grain handling

  • Milling grain

  • Mashing

  • Kettle/wort boil

  • Hopback/Coolship

  • Knock-out/yeast pitch

  • Cleanup and prep work (during the whole brew as well as after)

  • Proper use of cleaning chemicals and personal protection equipment (PPE)

  • Clean hops out of the coolship/hopback

  • Maintain house cleaning protocols for the heat exchanger, coolship, kettle, mash tun, wort way lines, yeast brink etc.

  • Ensure next brews malts are milled in, hops and salts are weighed out and HLT is topped off and ready for the following morning

Other Activities

Additional roles and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

  • Must be punctual, self-motivated, and employ effective time management skills

  • Ability to problem-solve and work through challenges while remaining calm, flexible and upbeat, knowing when to ask for help to prevent mistakes and complete the task

Qualification Requirements

  • Previous experience in a production brewery preferred

  • Previous experience with mechanical systems and troubleshooting problems

  • Inventory management skills

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Love and passion for craft beer is a must!

Physical Requirements

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential role satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying 55+ lbs and maneuvering up to 165 lbs

  • Must be physically capable of working in loud, hot and cold environments

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
